we get out loads of different things - social aspect, challenge of building something to go anywhere, etc everyones different, but with me it all comes down the pleasure i get from driving it, whether it be on road or off road, the smile, the laughs and the arse biting the seat moments when you think you couldnt have done that in a car. Thats the fun.

I enjoy the technical side of off roading, finding the best route around or over an obstacle with as little damage as possible if any. It is a legal way of driving to let off steam,
That's a couple of reasons I can identify with.

Solving a puzzle sounds good.

Road driving is just a chore today to get from A to B. I think laning is too slow for me though.

I went from a car capable of 140mph and sub 7 second 0-60 (tried and tested) to my jimny (had to make financial cuts so the above had to go), I chose the jimny over say a saxo or some other cheap car as I thought I could substitute the thrill of speed for the ability to go offroad and I wasnt wrong, you dont really get the same rush and trembling legs from excessivly speeding down country lanes at double the limit thinking yes I didnt die that time but its a different kind of rush when you conquer that difficult section without getting stuck and It still puts a grin on my face on back roads your just not going 100.
you cant compare going fast in a normal car to diving offroad in a jimny its a completely different kind of fun you just have to get out there and give it a go.
or maybe city folk just dont get it

Aha, a key question. I understand what you mean about fast cars and when I mentioned dune buggies I had deserts in mind and we don't have too many here. I have not owned a fast or even quick car as such since the mid eighties which was an RS2000. I have had the odd ones briefly like a Golf GTi but in the 80s I converted to 4x4s with a SWB Landy and never looked back. Every time I got a sporty motor I got bored with it. I do love speed and petrol but now, for me, it's just not on so it isn't about speed as such - I tend to be a get from A to B devotee. If a field is in the way or a snowdrift so be it. The last thing I did remotely in the way you are suggesting was the reservoirs in Wales in my SJ with a girlfriend. If I could afford to run it I would go for a big lump in a 4X4 - mind you 2.5TD isn't too tiny.

People around us did see some LR's and a big Toyota that didn't make it to the top and took the "Soft" route with their tale's between their legs...
Than there came some Suzuki's.. we went uphill without problems and they were very surprised...
Like the women besides me said in French... "un sans problemes..." (without problems).
And one of us said to her... yes.... Suzuki hé...
I think one of her friends did drove a LR because you hear her moaning and into the tone of her voice you did hear she was not happy with this remark !
At the end during the barbecue we did hear in some conversations that these Suzuki were crawling all-over the place without troubles and a lot off those people did envy our little Jimny's and Sam's.
Anyway we did had a lot of fun this sunday with the Suzuki's..... again !!!
