Most of the posts talk about 195/80/15 so it must be about availability, tyre choice and finally increased side wall flex.

I wonder?? Is it because they think that's what is best. 195 is a good size on a 5½" rim, certainly not overdoing it so there won't be much flexing. On a 7" it seems to me it is very undersized so the extra weight of the steel rim is a waste.
Also I like a sidewall that bulges a little to protect the rims.
I just don't get it

195's are a popular way to get ground clearance, don't need to change any of the ratios.
7" wide rims looks meaner, and generally they have an offset for stance/stability.

You can't increase ground clearance without changing the gear ratio though?

I run 195 80 15 on 7 j weller style wheels, only reason i have them is they came up for sale at a good price and tbh have gave a good bit ground clearance without having to change the transfer box etc.i also run spacers so i fit in wider tracks on lanes.
