Just come back from the annual Auto Show at Hillingdon Show Ground, Middx. No Suzuki stand and no Jimnys on display but talked to a an owner in the car park (FARMERS FIELD my first trip off road). Anyway this chap mainly uses his Jimny as a second car and mainly to pull his trailer. He said when he pulls the trailer he puts it 4 wheel drive and has never had a problem other than tyre wear over the years. His Jim had done 54000 miles. I thought if you did this on tarmac too often you get trouble!

It breaks a CV joint eventually.
Likely he broke one 53,999 miles ago and hasn't noticed if he only uses it on tarmac to pull a trailer. ;)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I am sure I read somewhere that towing things like caravans is better in four wheel drive but I doubt it was about Jimnys.

In The Olden Days when you either had a Series LandRover or one of those Austin Gypsies, it was normal to start off a huge trailer in 4wd low, then get into 2wd high when moving. In fact this was the only way to get a series back into 2wd, go to 4wd low to make the yellow button pop up.
We had much stronger transmissions, and less grippy tyres (no CV joints for us, proper spider joints).
I remember getting my Jeep jammed in 4wd once on tarmac (I carried on pulling in 4wd straight onto a road before I stopped) so I carried on in 4wd. When I jacked up a front wheel to get it out of 4wd it sprang round 1/4 turn  .

4WD low is still recommended when manoeuvring a trailer on grass, (you often saw swb landrovers with a towball on the front for parking trailers) in fact some of the boys with SJ transfers have modded the selector to give 2wd low to pull trailers, or you can simply leave the front hubs unlocked.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
