I have a decision to make. I don't like making decisions, but sometimes it happens :(

My Jimny failed its MOT today. It needs front discs and pads, drivers side front wheel bearings (is that the kingpin bearing?) and three new brake pipes to the rear. Quoted £275+VAT+the cost of MOT so I'm looking at about £400 altogether.

So now I have choices. I can either repair the car and keep it, and it will continue to cost me a fortune in petrol, but still be handy on the rare occasions that I need 4WD. I could repair the car and flog it with a years MOT, buy a cheaper car for the summer and then pay a premium for another 4x4 for the winter, or I could sell it as-is to someone that can do the repairs themselves much cheaper than I can get them done.

I know how much the first two options are going to cost me, so what I need to know is how much is the car worth without its MOT? Its a blue V-reg hard top with 67000 miles. Bodywork is in good condition apart from the odd car park ding here and there. There are a couple of small chips in the windscreen, but it has passed at least 4 MOTs with those. Runs fine, 4WD works fine. It is totally standard apart from the tow bar and 2009 Jimny alloys.

Any input gratefully accepted.

With the list of MOT failures, it is worth what it weighs as scrap, about £250-£300.
If you break it for parts, you will sell the wheels, engine, possibly gearbox and differentials, then you are left with the rest on your drive.

Fixed and MOT'd, probably £1000-£1200.

What could you buy for £400 + the £250 you get for yours as scrap? You could always fix yours yourself and do it for about £150

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
