just got off the phone from adrian flux, they have quoted me what i think is a very good deal, first of all on my bmw 330i fully comp and business protected no claims= £325
suzuki jimny either 2002/3/4 model the same as bmw 3000 miles a year £181 fully comp. RESULT I THINK.!!!!
So better start looking seriously for the jimny, have seen a few with high mileage, one in particular, 102,000 full service history for £3250 from dealer, new mot and warrenty, which is not too far from me. I dont want a soft top and would prefer either a green or sliver one. Anything i would need to be aware of when looking at high mileage vehicles, i do know my way around vehicles, but can always learn from the more experienced....ie you lot hehe
regards
jon

Thanks to your first post, I am now in the process of changing to a specialist 4x4 insurer for the J, which works out almost half the price of my policy with Admiral (multicar) and I can have modifications (Admiral wont allow any it seems).
I have been quoted £340 with Noel Dazely & Co Insurance Brokers fully comp and limited mileage (4000k per year). Now I have previous convictions and claims so its never going to be the cheapest, but is about £300 quid cheaper than Admiral
If only I knew these existed when I got the J (never had a 4x4 before).
I might see if they will do the Skoda as well.
As for looking at high mileage J's, just check the rear floor pan, sills and behind the front head lights for rust. Mine is 90k miles and the engine is really sweet, just the rear end has some of the brown stuff

£3250 seems expensive for a high mileage, but the prices are high because it is winter.
Mine has done between 150,000 and 170,000 I reckon, (The naughty previous owner has fitted a speedo that only has 70,000 miles on it now. When I did that DVLA MOT check on line I found the mileage went up steadily to 120,000, then the MOT before I bought the car it was only 60,000  )
Anyway, apart from bearings wearing out (I have a noisy gearbox, and it has had a front and a back wheelbearing and a new belt idler pulley) and it generally being tired, it is still going strong. However, I fully expect wear items like the fuel pump, alternator, water pump etc to fail at any time.
Pretty much anything that goes round is going to wear out eventually
The other problem with starship mileages, are they tend to be clocked up on motorways covered in dirt and salt, which helps the rust set in underneath.
What you want is the elusive old man's pride & joy, polished & vacuumed every Sunday, and he unfortunately cannot drive anymore so it has to be sold. (as opposed to the trendy yoof vehicle that has been run in 4wd on tarmac until both CVs have burst.)

I was with admiral multicar the first year with the jimny as i had three cars on the road at the time. Was cheap the first year but shocking the next. A 4x4 specialist was over a hundred pound less expensive. As for my 3rd car (91 fiat panda) tried adrain flux for a classic quote and they were over a thousand pound. Everywhere else were less than 400 which is still terrible

I was toying with the idea of Admiral Multicar, but you've put me off
I couldn't find out what happens to the NCD, whether each car has its own or they all get the maximum, then if you split them off again you only have one NCD...... (They do go on about each driver having an NCD that doesn't affect the others, but how that affects the premium isn't clear)
AF let me have the jimny on a classic policy for years, likely because Jimny was the name for the first Suzukis imported in The Olden Days, last year they said the company won't accept it anymore and doubled the price, also you don't get an NCD with a classic policy either, not even recognition of claim-free years
