As with most Jimnys, my Jimny has some scabby bits in the rear jack tray.
I have tried several ways to stop it... but it continues to rust :(

It appears, from underneath, that the small section is twin skin... no idea why!
I think water is getting into the void between the two skins via the several breathing/draining holes... 5 in total.
The moisture is then getting trapped by what ever is between the two skins, causing the rust.

Just wondering if there is anything to stop us from blocking these holes off, stopping water getting in there?

If my description isn't the clearest it'd help to climb underneath and have a quick look.

You can try sealing it off, but you will just seal in the rust :(

If you look at where they go rusty, it is everywhere that there is a double skin.

i had the rear bumper off mine today*, and the rear corner of the body is rusted out, where there is a double skin

* Mr stupid here fitted a towbar. This makes changing the exhaust a 3 hour job rather than a 30 minute one.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I had the same issue a month or so ago... Ended up stripping the bumper, towbar and even then had to grind the box off as the studs were solid!

My thoughts in blocking the holes was to eliminate the moisture... We all know the things needed for rust

My Jimny is totally solid except for that tray... And its seems worse directly above the near.side drain hole
Any water thrown up by the rear wheels goes straight for the rear tray... And the holes are a perfect trap

Yep thats where mine is going. Going to strip the back end out and get it sorted over the coming weeks.

I did wonder if the whole tray could be cut out and a single, level skin be put in place.

I've no intention of carrying a stock jack so it serves no purpose.

Had a good look under mine the other night.

It's holding far too much water at the mo, but I'm going to attempt to get some serious waxoyl in there when the weather finally dries up!
