Hi all

Bit of a vague question, but hopefully someone can help. I've seen a 2000 Jimny for sale near me, low mileage, good condition, service history etc. But, the seller says "UNFORTUNATELY TOP END OF ENGINE TAPPING STILL DRIVES BUT WONT SUGGEST DRIVING IT TOO FAR".

Could this be a simple fix (e.g. sticking tappets or something) or is it likely to be something major? Wondering if it's worth a look, or if it's likely to need serious work?

Can anyone suggest what it might be, or if I go and view it, what to look for to eliminate possible causes of this noise?

Thank you.

It could just be tappets, although if it has been left a long time then the seat on the tappets will be worn and the cam lobes may also be damaged. If you get it at a good price then a head refurb is not too hard . Jimmy engines have a tendency to suffer oil starvation around No4 cylinder on the head so if you get it then take it apart quickly to ensure you sort the head issues before the cam siezes

Avoid unless really cheap.

The twincams seize the top end if they don't get regular oil changes, and the single cam motor is getting hard to source.

Could be literally anything. likely the seller does know and thinks it is an expensive fix.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Thanks gents

I did ask the seller and he / she said "Don't know, could be pistons gone". I'm in no hurry, so I think I'll give it a miss.
