Sounds like one of the wires to the sender has chafed through and is earthing onto the body or chassis somewhere or the sender has got stuck up.
I think changing the sender is a tank out jobbie, so good luck!

Sounds like the fuel tank sender has stuck, you will need to remove it and have a look,

Give the top off the dash a big slap, I've had that before and that was after changing the sendor! A few peoe weren't impressed!
