Further to my better halfs post of the other day (Vixen) the Jimny arrived on a transporter.
It was purchased from ebay (unseen)as damaged and we were aware that the body/paintwork was in need of some work. None of this was a problem and due to the age of the vehicle (04) I was willing to spend a bit of cash sorting that out.
When I first drove it from the lorry the steering was tight ie when you let go of the wheel it didnt self centre and it has the 'death wobble'
A closer inspection revealed that the seller had conveniently not mentioned that the vehicle was a death trap (his 80 year old mother has had it as a daily drive for 2 years!!!)
From the top but probably not all encompassing
The front axle is completely shot, not just the kingpin bearings. Axle is a replacement and badly fitted.
rear springs, one has six coils one has seven
OSF anti rollbar link. incorrect unit insecurely mounted to axle, mount cut to make it fit.
OSF Pannard rod bent
O/S track rod end wrong and has been welded into the arm.
Sump repaired with liquid metal. Sump plug held in with same. Unlikely this can be removed if it is ever to be refitted.
OSF headlight held in with liquid metal.
Airbags replaced and N/S not plugged in (I'm reluctant to even try!) They are replacements as they are grey and the rest of the dash/trim is black.
Ic came with 4 new tyres (250 miles) this is now obviously because the vehicle is miles out of track and because of the #### workmanship cant be
. It obviously scrubbed out the last four.
All this is before I can look at the bodywork, which at least I was expecting and willing to spend money on.
Looking around a recon axle is going to do me for £450 but will bolt straight on and sort several of the problems. Other bits will need replacing as I go.
The hardest bit and one of the most important to find will be the sump. Normally these get sold as part of a complete engine.
I dont suppose anyone on here has a dead jimny engine they are raping for bits (04 DOHC if that makes a difference). Or a complete front axle come to that.
Anyone need a full set of kingpin bearings (french Timken) and seals which I now shant need if I have to buy a recon job.
How it passed 2 MOT tests is a miracle unless they too are bent. The vehicle is about to be reported to VOSA as it should never have passed a MOT with not even an advisory with these faults.
I am trying to seek a partial refund (I wont get a full one) from the seller before I start court procedings against him or his mother
In desperation

Wow ... sounds a nightmare ... Hope you get it sorted ...
on another note, do you know if you would recoupe your costs if you were to break it ? is the bodywork in reasonable condition ?
I reciently picked up some parts from a chap in Stoke who was selling a jimny he had broken. I think most of it was gone, but if its any use to you, he may have some parts left ...
will dig out the details and PM you
Good luck

The sump seems to be a key item. An axle I can get from CAM suzuki

That's bad news. Sounds like it has had a crash and been repaired?
The rear springs are different on each side, but I don't know what the difference should be.
Without wishing to pile more trouble on you, before fixing/aligning the front axle I would check that the chassis itself is straight otherwise you might be pouring good money after bad.

Thats interesting to know Martin. Why the hell would anyone put springs of different lengths (coils) on
Maybe the rear springs are right then....
It was previously a Cat D but has been repaired by a blind man it seems.
Does anyone know what is done to an axle for a refurb, other than the kingpin bearings? An axle is £175 but a refurbed one is £450. So a set of bearings and seals is £50 but what else is done for the money.
I think I may have found a sump, fingers and toes crossed but wont know for sure until monday. I'd like to get my hopes up but daren't
