Neither my Grand vitara or Jimny have one, both are 52 plates.

My 2006 has one and the gauge does exactly the same as yours Halford
It's went from Perth to Dundee, about 25 miles on dual carriage at 65-70 way with the light on all the way but it was VERY close to dry.

My 04 Mode doesn't have one
As above, i can get about 100mile out of half a tank, and then the 2nd half lasts a good 160-180mile before hitting the red

The needle behavior is not consistent on mine either, but it has a different pattern: it will stay at full level (over the "tank full" line) for about 50-60 km, then drop to about 75% quite quickly, then slowly creep to 50%, then it drops quickly again to about 25-30% of the scale and then again slowly to "empty tank".
Some experienced mechanics told me that over time, the fuel gauge develops a pattern of its own depending on how often you put gas in, how often you top up the tank and so on. Therefore I don't rely much on it, just the light bulb and the "A" odometer which seems to give me exactly ~400 km until the yellow fuel light comes up
