Can anybody suggest older vehicles that have a high seating position that are not necessarily 4x4. It is said that the Qashqais are fairly high but they are a bit out of my price range - by a mile.

If you want something cheap, the old style Citroen Picasso was ok for height.

Our cherokee while only 10 year old and quite expensive is a very comfortable car with a reasonable seat height, between the Jimny and the defender. Older ones are very competitive on price and availability

I had a Cherry classic about 15 years ago and often thought about a 2002 Jeep but they are fairly costly.
I am thinking about a shopping trolley type motor and some Picassos in diesel are £130/£110 road tax with claimed 55mpg. Just have to try any Picasso to see if I hate it cos I do not like MPVs or I can live with one.
