Two external HDD have let me down. 
I used them to keep backups but since I went to W7 one came up as corrupted and needed formatting and within days the other did too. I had transferred all of what was on my last OS (XP) to one of the drives. In short I have lost 15 years of data. Ever since I went digital camerawise. I am now putting stuff on DVD (and some on USB) in the hopes it won't degrade, fail or whatever it does over the years.
Google started this by no longer supporting XP so they can take some blame too.
