I have some old floppy disks - the 3" ones - about 100 with loads of info on them. I have a USB floppy disk drive but I need to know how to access the data. At the moment I get the format nonsense. I suspect the disks were used with W2000 though I had thought they were XP. Can I salvage the data? I tried looking for some recovery software but all I could find was "recovery" stuff. I need something to read the floppy and translate it to W7.

If they are windows disks, either MSDOS FAT or NTFS then they should be readable with the latest windows. Another way would be to mount them under Linux to see what can be read. They do become unreadable over time

That's what I thought; I am sure they were done with XP or possibly W2000 but even so I have tried several and all the PC wants to do is format them for use. I hate computers.

I never anticipated that they would fail as a result of age. :(
