If someone randomly knocks on the door asking if something is for sale I feel they are usually interested in something else and maybe checking if anyone's in.
Amazing how many dogs go missing from back gardens this way.

I have 2 akita's and a very secure rear garden
I wouldn't personally try to remove either of them

the stationary engine community has a similar problem.
we call him "the Drongo"
basically, thre is a chap from Lincoln shire, and by all accounts, goes by the name Mr Wallace.
He calls at all times of the day, and if your within his fuel distance, he'll call physically. to basically cold call on if you have any engines for sale. this in itself is unnerving, but then he'll do something like say "I'll give you my bank card and take the money out as my giro comes in each week", by which time most sane people smell a rat.
if you tell him to sod off, about 5 minutes after hanging up, a woman will call asking for engines, his daughter!
at rallies, he flogs everything he takes with him, and at the end of the rally, he will try and blag petrol to get home, all a rouse of course, he's got plenty just lives off the gullibility/generosity of others.
rough as a badgers bottom, and thick as to boot, hurling insults doesn't work, he's too thick to take them in.
he's sphere of operations used to just be within 10 miles of home, but now his borders know no limits, he's blagged as far north as Durham, and even dabbles in calling people down dorset way.
Paul.
