OK here's a really weird thought for you engineering type chaps

for some time now, I've been watching out for a generator powerful enough for my MIG welder,

from what I've learnt (with some good advice from bigjimny members) I need something with a wopping KVA like a 9hp Honda GX270 4.4 KVA 3.5 KW Generator, this baby is a 242 cc petrol engine

it's occured to me that wherever I'd would want to use the MIG, that's where the Jimny would be :S sounds like a song

so it crossed my mind that, heres a 1300 cc petrol engine, just how difficult would it be to create 5 KVA

I'm sure there's plenty of reasons why this couldn't be done, but is there one reason which could let it be done ?

bear in mind you're conversing with a senile Geordi layman

My old series 1 SWB Landrover came with an alternator that could run welding rods. It came that way so I don't know where the previous owner bought the unit from, but I guess they must still be made somewhere. Just stick welding though.

:D

Just looked it up on the Net and Zena manufacture an alternator/welder for cars so there is at least one mob out there making them.

I've thought about fitting hydraulic pumps and air compressors, but never a generator! You need an old SJ transfer case with the PTO output, connected to a big starter motor off a truck (motors are also generators if you spin them around, right?) Connect a couple of welding leads and watch the sparks fly! Haha. No idea if that would work or not...
