I've phoned them twice and had two different tales. Do I call them again and go for best of three??
I sold a motor, sent off the log book then had the car back. So your guess is as good as mine where the log book is? If the new owner sends it back to DVLA when he gets it they destroy it according to tale #2 and if I want the log book I have to pay the £25 to get one.

Not quite sure what you mean? You sold a car so you gave the new owner the tear off bit and sent the V5 back with his details on? Yes?
In the meantime you have got the car back for whatever reason?
How long ago was this?
If it's less than 3 weeks wait a little longer and the person you originally sold the car to should receive a V5 in their name. All you have to do then is ask him for the V5 and send it back with your details as if you have bought the car yourself.
I think what is happening is they are assuming the V5 is lost or if sent back £25 is the charge for a replacement V5?
If it's been some time and the person you sold the car to has not received it but still has the small bit ask for it back.
I'm not sure how it all works now but you might be able to still do something with the tear off bit.
If all this fails I'm afraid you'll have to cough up £25

That's about it. The other tale from the DVLA was to get the new keeper to return the log book to DVLA and it gets sent to the last owner Ie me. That doesn't seem right really or at least it is flawed. The latest story was that it gets destroyed when returned and I have to buy a new one if I can't get the V5 from the new keeper but would you give up a log book with your name on it.

The weird part is just who do they think has the log book; I wonder who they'll send the tax reminder to if the log book is not in force. All daft really.

Have you asked him?? Is he local?
Section D covers it if you still have or got back the small bit when you got the car back. After all you are the new owner lol

I have the little green slip; he gave it back to me but wrote his name in it. I suppose I could tippex it out, enter my name and then send it off as section D suggests. He would be the previous keeper and I would be the new keeper. Then with that enclosed I won't have to pay the 25 notes. I emailed him today to find out if he has had the log book as it has been three weeks.
Meanwhile the car has run out of tax. The MoT is up shortly and I ain't going to renew that even though I think there is nowt wrong with it.

No don't tippex anything just send it off with the explanation that although you sold the car the deal fell through and you are still the reg. keeper. With a bit of luck you'll get a V5 by return.
I would also report it as SORN otherwise you might get done for that as well??
I was once when I bought a car that was already on SORN but it ran out around the time of purchase. Either the previous owner did not do it because he had sold it or I never got a reminder. Either way it cost me £60
