2001 speedo not working

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and reconnecting it, actually does sort out some "odd" electrical problems. 
If still no joy, there are wires to the sender on the transfer case by the rear prop flange.
