Swivel leak but no play? was created by Ads1987
Hi everyone,

I've just brought a w reg jimny to replace my defender, it's currently got big Kaiman malatesta mud tyres on that vibrate like hell. I've already found a replacement set but the front drivers swivel has ejected a load of grease and oil everywhere, Ive already read the how to guides etc and it's a very similar build to the defenders. My question is that I don't seem to have any play when jacking up and wobbling the wheels, so could the rough tyres have just vibrated the half shaft seal ? Or would you guys just suggest changing the king pin and wheel bearings a long with swivel seals etc?

Thanks!

Personally, if it was me, I would change the Kingpin bearings as the cost is minimal. You may as well do it as you will have taken the axle in bits anyway to change the drive-shaft seal.

do you think the main wheel bearings will need replacing? I suppose it just makes sense to do them anyway?

No I wouldnt, That necessitates removal of a large nut that you need a special tool for. Just stick withh changing the kingpin bearings. The bottom one will probably be like the bottom onr in this picture.

If you only have vertical play, then chances are the wheel bearing will be ok.

Can you change the king pin bearings easily without having the bearing removal tool then?

Cheers guys

I assume you just unbolt the swivel seal and kingpin bearings and pull it off then?

There is a "How to " guide here. Tells you everything you want to know.

yeah i've read the guides, very useful but just wasn't sure how the hub would come off without the tool to remove the drive shaft/bearing etc

Once you have removed the circlip and the square washer This will then allow you to take off the hub (once the kingpins have been removed). When you take the hub off the wheel bearing will come with it. Making it unnecessary to use the spacial tool to remove the wheel bearing.
Hope that I have made things clearer.
