front axle binding was created by adamjimny
iv got a problem with the front axle that it locks up and stops forward movement but its okay in reverse.

iv narrowed it down to
  1. drive shaft broken
  2. diff busted
  3. crown and pinion got some debris in teeth

does anybody know whats happening or had any similar problems as i want it fixed asap then i can get an MOT booked

its not when turning

i can move 5 meters or so then it just locks

if it was a cv surely it would be constant and when under pressure?

The one that would be causing the problem you're having, would more likely have seemed to be in pieces than fine.

If you have inspected them after the binding occurred, and they looked fine, then they sure aren't causing that.

Once my wheel bearings went on one side of my SJ's front axle, and that caused similar problems. But I don't think broken shafts or diff could cause that...

Make sure the hubs are free, and nothing inside the axle can bind, as nothing goes round in 2wd. The MOT doesn't use 4wd so you don't need fix it before.

If it is still binding and the hubs are free and it is in 2wd you have a big problem.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Failed bearing in the diff? Sounds like you will need to pull it out.
