Never took mine for serious mudplugging so I can't comment as I never felt the need to lift it etc. but as it was in standard form albeit with wide wheels it did fine.

I think you may have more control over the throttle and progress with an automatic if you have lower low ratios by way of a rocklobster transfer box when using holding gears but the gearbox oil cooler needs to be replaced with a larger one or it'll overheat.

I've not tried it but Rhino Ray has.

Pros:

Your never in the wrong gear
Copes with different sized tyres without gearing change.
Torque converter does exactly what it's name implies
No clutch to fill with mud

I love autos for off roading

Cons:

Jimny autos like fresh new fluid regularly
Engine braking downhill is limited, to you have to lock it in first.

I just love autos but Martin, tell us about lifts in Jimny autos. Easy or not?

Never done one but I cannot see why it would be different from a manual car, apart from if you do a body lift and have to play with the selector. I have seen one on a spring lift and it was fine. However, its no street racer!

Sorry, what I meant to say when babbling was the rocklobster and 1st holding gear will give you engine braking.

My Pajero is auto and in the snow seems unrivalled and across fields is superb. ;)

Mine was a UK spec Shogun so it came with a rear air locker as standard.
I was very surprised how much difference it made. B)

My old RangeRover was auto, and it was excellent off road.

(It is the only time I have ever messed with the shifter in an auto too, I locked it in 1 once to trundle down a slope that I could never have walked down)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
