New wheel bearing adding grease? was created by Keirravn
Hey all.
Have a new wheel bearing to fit. I also have some good waterproof grease that I used on the kingpins.
Should I try to cram some in the wheel bearing or should I just leave it with its thin factory grease?
Don't suppose it matters much either way but thought I'd ask anyway

It can't hurt but as long as you seal the hub properly it's not necessary.

I assume these are 'open' bearings and not sheilded? ie you can see the rollers or... balls
All open bearings that I've ever come across (car and aircraft) we always filled them with grease. The technique I was taught is this...
Get a good dollop of grease in the palm of your left hand (assuming you are right handed) and with the bearing in your right hand, very quickly and repeatedly 'scrape' the edge or the bearing across the grease, occasionally repositioning the bearing in order to deposit the grease around the entire race.
You will notoice the grease going through the race and coming out on the opposite side
Done like this only much faster
Other people sometimes chuck the bearing in a poly-bag of grease and manipulate the bearing through the grease in the bag, but its hard to see any gaps that you may have missed that way

Cheers guys.
It's what I would call semi sealed. It's the koyo bearing from the bigjimny shop so has a plastic shield which would prevent packing it properly but I'd wondered if I should pop it in a bag of grease and try to get some in. If the hub is sealed though I won't bother. Cheers

I think I see the bearing you mean.
If it was me doing it. I'd get more grease into it.
You can also get a "needle adapter" for grease guns - I have one of THESE which is ideal for filling sheilded bearings.
It's a bit fiddly to use, but if you can get someone to help and say, pump the grease while you direct the needle, it works well
