Hi
My Jimny starts squealing when I get to around 40mph. It's not constant, but it's very noticeable when it starts!
Any ideas?
Cheers
Pete

Pete does it get worse if you start loading the alternator i.e. heater fan on maximum, lights, wipers going, radio etc?
Only my neighbours Jimny had this problem; it started alright and ran alright, but she noticed the alternator belt started shrieking.
I looked at it for her but couldn't find much wrong.
She eventually took it to a local garage to get the belts changed. They thought they had fixed the problem it but the fault didn't go away, and it was only one cold morning when she had the heater fan and wipers on that we noticed it got worse; turn them all off and it quietened down.
The fix was to change the alternator

When you have the belts off to replace them just check the crank pulley is firm. It's a silly two part bonded thing and the bond can fail making it squeal.

Took it for a spin this evening. Did find that after a cold start the squealing begins when I get to around 40mph, but once warm, it doesn't begin until around 50mph. The electrics made no difference - turned the lights on and the fan up to full.
However, I do need to replace the front wheel bearings. Could this be making the squealing? It's definitely coming from the front end.

The bugger is still squealing after I had two belts changed when it went in for an MOT. So I guess it's a misalignment. Is this easy to fix?

Check the crank pulley as they have a rubber damper that deforms. It's the only pulley that can come misaligned because the rest are solid.
