Hi all

Just this morning, I took delivery of my first Jimny! a 2000 W plate :woohoo:

However, once the guy had gone, and I had a more thorough look at it, I noticed a couple of potential problems. (To be honest, they're probably not problems, but thought I'd ask here to be certain!)

Firstly, there's a bit of oily gunk at the bottom of the front hubs. Is this a leaky king pin bearing, or is this just standard and I should ignore it? (No wheel wobble or anything else)

Secondly, there seems to be a sticky spray coming off the auxiliary belts. (In front of the plastic timing belt cover - it's a 2000 reg SOHC engine, 58,000 miles). This sticky stuff has dripped right down to the bottom of the engine. (See pics). It doesn't have any smell, and it doesn't feel like oil - it's sticky and clearish. The chap I bought it off did say it had been parked under a tree for a month or two, but I'm not sure how tree sap would have got into the auxiliary belts? You can see the sticky mark inside the engine bay, and somehow getting all the way down to the bottom of the engine bay. I had it running on my drive for 5 or 10 mins and nothing actually dripped off the bottom onto the drive, so I gues it's not a major problem, but I'd be interested to know what it might be! Any thoughts?

It's probably just new car syndrome, but it would be nice to have my mind put at rest!

Cheers all.

Giles

It could be an oil leak from behind the cam belt cover
Rocker cover gasket leaking at the front
Water pump leaking
Pas pump/pipes leaking

Thanks.

Don't think it's oil or coolant though - it doesn't look, smell or feel like oil, and it doesn't dry up like coolant would - it's still there now, just the same as when I left it 4 hours ago. Could be PAS fluid I suppose, but the sticky stuff doesn't smell, while my PAS fluid reservoir smells a bit chemical, and a wee bit burnt. It's also a little low on PAS fluid, but not dangerously so at all. Can't feel any leaks in the PAS reservoir or hoses - where is the PAS pump?

The whole front of the engine is lightly coated in this sticky stuff, where it's been flung around by the belts and the fan...

Also, does anyone have any thoughts on the hub grease?

Cheers.

Change the kingpin bearings.
They are always gone, and by the amount of dirt on the bolts, yours haven't been done for a while.

Water gets in the swivels, and comes out as rusty greasy gunk.

Never ever ever ever drive through deep water, go round it or over it ;)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

So if it not water or oil or pas fluid what other fluid s there

Try jet washing it clean then run it and see where it comes from

Thanks gents.

Apparently the car has never been offroad, and it seems odd that you can't drive a jimny through water without causing problems! But I'll add king pin bearings to the bits to do.

As for the sticky gunk, I don't think its pas fluid as there's plenty left in the car, but I don't know what else it could be! Where is the pas pump in a jimny? Don't have a pressure washer, but I'll give the area a wipe with a petrol soaked rag and see if I can find the source...

Out of interest, is the front main oil seal a Bugger to change.on a jimny?

Thanks again.
