New Gen Jimny Tyre size was created by chmnda
Hi there,

Does anyone know what's the max tyre size the new gen Jimny can go?
without lifting and still sticking with the stock rim which come with the car.

Everyone is saying 215/75r15 but that does not do much to the lift of the car, it is just a slightly wider tyre.
Anyone mind helping here?

Thanks!!

The problem seems to be that even though the arches look oversized there isn't an awful lot of room before the tyres start rubbing. There's also the gearing to consider too.

I don't have a gen4 so can only go off what is being reported here but it certainly seems that way without a lift.

215/75R15 is the biggest that the stock rims will take. A couple of people in Australia have fitted 235/75R15, but those exceed the recommended limits of the rims so probably not legal or insurable in the UK.

If you want more clearance then new rims and a lift is the way to go, but then you start getting into the realms of needing to alter gearing to match.

I´m still waiting for my Jimny but already bought a 235/75-15 BFG tires. Gonna install them on the standard aluminium wheels. Did talk to some guys at the tire store who said they had already used that tires on few Jimny´s and it did not rub anywhere. I´m not sure I believe them but anyway, Im gonna start by installing a 1 inch spring spacers and might do some little bit of cutting from the inside of the bumper.

If that is not enough then I'm gonna use a new ( used ) Jimny steel wheels with the original tires until I have done some proper modifications.

Would be worried on wet days with 235's. Aqua planing on 215's is scary enough.

That wide surface area and low weight will make it very hairy.

Be careful in the wet and at high speed.

215/80R15 are within the limits for the original rim, smaller (height and width) than 235/75R15 so should be OK.

I don't worry about that. I have been driving 4x4 on big tires for the last 40 years or so. From 33 to 38 inch and yes its different but you get used to it as everything else. I look forward to try it out in the snow and its more slippery then the wet roads.

Found this online today guys as I’m looking to go to a set of 215/75/15. It suggests that the standard 5.5 inch rim wouldn’t be suitable for that width of tyre. Makes sense particularly when you’ve aired down. Is this rubbish? What do you guys think?

It suggests that the standard rim 5.5 inches can run a max 195 width tyre. To safely run a 215 width tyre you’d need a 7” rim. (Apparently)

Their own rim calculator doesn't agree with that table, so I think it's safe to call that just plain wrong.

The increase in tyre width is less than an inch, remember. Certainly my 215/75/15s are quite happy on my standard rims.

Cars with low profile tyres are different to SUVs with high profile tyres. The standard fit for the gen3 is a 205 on a 5.5j rim. It is possible though difficult to find the recommended rim size for every single size of tyre from every brand as they are legally bound to provide it. As a general rule though the rim should be about 70pc the width of the tyre give or take ish.
