Ok, this is the part where I make myself look really dumb...(that's enough from you already, Daniel  )

Set about wiring up my new floodlights this afternoon, positioned the relay in a suitable place, connected T30 to the battery, T87 to the lamps, one to ground and then the fun started....

Using the nearside headlight because access is easier, found 3 wires....one is RED/WHITE, one is RED, and one is WHITE/BLUE.

Can anyone tell me which of these three I should use for the trigger?
I tapped into the RED/WHITE one with a crappy Scotchlock just to see if it worked, and the lamp came on without me switching it on in the cab!!!!!!

As you've no doubt gathered by now, I'm completely and utterly useless with electrics..............please can someone sort me out with some sort of a plan, and even better, a wiring diagram?
Everywhere I've looked so far just says " trigger", or " from switch..."

My car is a 2004 G13bb, Santana-built , and I'm not wiring the lamps through a dashboard switch, just the main beam/flash circuit.

Thanks, in desparation...

Gus ;)

Hi Gus ;)

Suzuki headlights are switched on the negative side, not the positive like normal cars :woohoo:

I've not done it on a Jimny yet, but here's my old (2003!) diagram from the days of Vitaras -

So we basically wire both the 'feed' and 'trigger' (86 & 87) to a constant live, via a fuse! And then use the earth terminal (85) to trigger the relay.

i.e. the earth wire (85) on the relay will normally be connected to one of the three positive wires on the headlights, so it won't trigger as it doesn't have an earth, then when main beam and a particular wire (it's red with silver bands on a Vitara?) drops to earth, then the relay will trigger and the spot lamps would come on (via 30)...

Hope that helps, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable with actual Jimny wiring will be along soon... ;)

Holy smoke....there's no wonder I can't make the damn thing work :woohoo: :woohoo: Talk about defying logic

When you say 86 & 87 go to a permanent live, I assume you mean the battery??
I only mention it because, in a normal scenario, the lead from the battery would only be live when triggered, not permanently....or am I reading too much into it ,Dave???

Many thanks, by the way, it already makes a bit more sense ;)

Gus :)

Through a fuse to the battery is the usual method.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

I'm watching this with a keen eye. I've got a loom wired into my jimny in preparation for a wee Christmas pressie that's coming my way. I've got everything wired as per your diagram Dave but I'm sure I read on another thread here it was the red cable that was used as the trigger. I'm hoping someone can help out and confirm.

Sorry to high jack your thread gus but I thought I'd get away with it as it's relevant to your post too.

Thanks
Tony.

Not a problem, Tony....threads are for everyone's help, not just mine

The wiring at my headlamps don't even have one which is red with silver bands, so you may still be right about the red being used as the trigger!!

When I'm done, I'll post a picture....the lights will either be working as they should, or there'll be a lot of water and blue lights around...time will tell :woohoo: :woohoo:

Gus :)

Yes, that's a Vitara diagram, not a Jimny...

You need to find which of the three 'live' wires to the headlight bulb drops to negative when the headlights go to full-beam...

Dave ;)

Gus think of the relay as 2 separate circuits
Terminal 30 on the relay is the power supply in to work your lights. Usually from the battery via a fuse. The power feed out to your lights is usually from terminal 87 on the relay.
Terminals 86 and 85 switch the relay on / off via a separate power and earth feed .... This makes terminals 30 & 87 connect or disconnect hence powering up or down your lights if that makes sense

If in doubt ...... Flat out ??

No worries. I'm hoping to grab an hour and try and get the lightbar fitted today. I have fitted wiring for mine so fingers crossed I got the trigger wire right. I'll let you know how I get on. :)
