Yes a normal one wont last as long as a s/s one but if you rip it off or crush it offroad a steel one will be alot cheaper to replace

I was thinking more of a road car and exhaust life in less severe conditions.

I'm guessing that's a good solution. I'm not too savvy with Jimnys but I bet the rear box and rear pipe is where all the rot is mostly.
