Anyone a member of the 4x4 Response?

Morning all,
I have only just discovered the 4x4 Response website and also my local group.

Is anyone on here a member?

It looks fun to me!

For those that are not aware...

4 x 4 Response is a national network of volunteers with 4 x4's

You join up and then can be called upon by emergency services to assist during times of need. be that cars stuck at festivals to giving a nurse a lift!!

Start off by joining the national forum to see what is going on and make sure it is something you want to get involved with then join the local group.

Once registered, the way it works is you get text messages about potential issues, like impending tornadoes or floods etc. Then you get text messages asking for assistance. You either reply and join in and help or ignore if you are busy.

Lots of training days and social events going on. There is a cost to join of £30 first year membership that includes PPE kit and then £10 each year after.

You don't get a blue flashing light and you must stay within the realms of the law. They have a number of other rules that must be followed.

This the national website...
www.4x4response.info/

I would be interested to hear from anyone that is already part of the 4x4 Response.

Cheers
Paul

I'm a member of devon and cornwall 4x4 response, we pay £20 to join and £10 a year their after.
Its been quiet this year as far as emergency call outs but we have plenty of other events going on which we support such as 10 tors and tour de moor.
I've been a member since D&C4x4 started and have enjoyed everything I've been able to do.

Thanks Dan. Interesting reading.

I am heading down to Wales on Thursday for a few days with my mum. Spotted that the local 4x4 Response group have a radio kit training day and managed to get an invite. So will be able to get an insight into what it is all about. I'll try and do the same with the Hertfordshire group before joining up.

Dan, if you are free tomorrow night, there is a pub meet at Three Horseshoes, Hooks Cross, nr Stevenage. Other Jimnys welcome. MarkB should be there, plus a couple of the others that turned up on the recent offroad day at Standon. Hope you can make it.

Cheers all.

Essex is not part of the National 4x4 Response as far as I can tell and is instead covered by Essex Land Rover Club's Rover Rescue: www.elrc.info/info/rover_rescue.html

I would lend a hand with something like this if they hadn't made it a LandRover only affair.

There's not as much you can do with a vehicle as small as a Jimny but you could get a District Nurse about on their rounds, or an Emergency Doctor, or tow an Ambulance back to grippier tarmac if it got stuck on ice etc.

You could even just deliver stuff for Emerency Services that needs to get from one place to the other and can't wait.

Never mind. I'll just go sledging and greenlaning instead and be the envy of most others as I get on with my shopping at Tescos's doing a full shop in the snow.

That thread on Pistonheads got a bit heavy! Some valid points but crickey some strong opinions!

iloveics, do you have any stories or experiences to share?

Hi Kirkynut, I agree about the Pistonheads thread. Very messy and lots of negativity. With one or two good contributions.

I'm going to find out for myself. Off to deepest Wales for a few days in the Jimny and plan to attend one of the 4x4 Response training days in Powys (Llandrindod Wells) this Saturday. Although I am not a member of the 4x4 response group, they are happy for me to come along.

The training day is all about radio kit, so should be interesting.

I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Cheers Dan,

A couple of questions for you and any other 4x4 Responder...

How many calls can you get a month?

What sort of calls do you get?

I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like an insight into the 4x4 Response activities.

If you look on some of the local greoup websites they have call out logs, so you can see what they have been up to.

Here is hertfordshires call out log > Herts 4x4 Response log

As mentioned you can join the 4x4 response forum to see what they get up to > National 4x4 response Forum

There were very active in the South West yesterday due to localised flooding and storms.

Anyway, I'll report back what I find on Saturday.

Cheers
