Rusty High Level Brake Light Mount...

My 2003 Jimny O2 Convertible is in pretty good shape and doesn't seem to have a rust problem. But I noticed some rusty water streaks on the back door behind the spare wheel - When I touched the High-Level Brake Light fitting lots of particles of rust fell out.

Removing the plastic cover revealed this! - A real water trap here!

I carefully removed the fragile piece and screwed it to a block of wood that was covered in polythene. This kept the basic shape and mounting positions in the right place. I then coated it with a rust cure product, fibre-glassed the area completly and painted it.

Fibre-Glassed, painted and back on the car. Not pretty, but functional.

You'd never know what I'd done when the plastic cover was re-attached.

What anti-rust treatment did you use?

I have the same problem, in fact mine is somewhat worse as the mounting plate has completely rusted through and is in two parts. Any ideas where I can get a replacement

I don't know anything about the construction of the back door on the gen.3 but would it be practical to mount the lamp at the top of the door like on the gen.4?

There isn't really room for that, the plate is there to lift the light above the spare wheel mounted on the door.
