Remote Gear Change Mechanism - Removal and Service

I've got a stiff gear change in 1st. and 2nd. I've lubricated the gear lever from inside the cab, with no real improvement. I've been to my local Suzuki main dealer to see if the gear change was slicker and smooth, compared to mine and it was

I suspect I need to have a go at the remote control.
1. Is it possible / easy to remove the remote with gear box in situ?
2. Any suggestions welcome

Its not too bad to get at you have to work around the propshaft but there is enough room, check that the bolt isnt missing from the rod that is mounted to the back of the gear box through a bush, mine was missing when i got it and made selecting 1st and 2nd a bit difficult, i think its a common problem and there was a recall on it, there isnt alot else to make it stiff if you have greased it.
To remove it completely you need to remove the stick then undo the 2? bolts inside under the gaiter, the 2 bolts from the selector rod and 4 bolts that hold the rear engine mount on to the back of the gearbox and possibly a few other bolts ive forgotten about. There is a section on it in martins changing the clutch write up.

Thank you Richard, I'll give it a go. From Martins Clutch Article I wasn't too sure if I'd need to remove the exhaust pipe etc, so your reply is good news.

Should be fine to leave the exhaust on i think, maybe give you more room to work if it was out of the way mind you.

Once again thanks. I've just been checking on the recall notification and you were correct Suzuki did have a recall for that fault. However it was for an earlier model, mine is a 2003. I try to do my home work prior to starting any job, I've found it can save me lot of time and struggling.

Still good advice and this seems a good place to start, so I'll be in the pit this week end and will get back to the forum with the result. The exhaust is fairly new so should not be too hard to get off. I asked the garage to put 'copper slip' on all bolts as they did the job, in anticipation such an eventuality!
