As Lambert says, they have magnets to hold them, the vacuum only moves them across (well technically, it is air pressure acting on the side without vacuum that does it, which is why both pipes have to be clear, along with the little air filter on the valve block)
If you listen, they go Click-click when they come off, and Clack-clack when they engage as they hit the magnets (I actually think there is only a magnet holding it disengaged).
