Gen4: Adding gear selector light was created by Angerhaus
Hello folks,
I've seen a few guys, including Geordie Jimny , add a LED light strip to the bottom side of the automatic gear selector console to light up the gear indicator (yes, I know gear is indicated in the gauge cluster, I just figure it's not a bad idea to also have the console light up too). However, instead of tapping the fusebox for power like Geordie did in his DIY linked above, I could tap the backlight of nearby buttons and switches so the gear indicator would only light up when interior backlighting turns on. I'm thinking the connector assembly (picture attached) to power windows, traction control, and hill descent toggles nearby would have a (+) wire for backlighting. Does anyone by any chance know which wire it is?
If not, I'd like to know how I can find out with a multimeter. Would I simply be looking for a wire that gets 12V when cabin backlighting is turned on, but off the rest of the time? I've done something similar on my FJ Cruiser, but I merely followed a DIY guide step by step that pointed out the exact colour of wire to tap...
Many thanks.

Looks like a good modifications, didn't realise they have no backlight as standard. I would be fitting one also if I actually had a G4 auto. It looks a little on the bright side to me, if so (only fitting will tell), I would investigate dimming the LEDs slightly.
Can't help with wire colours, but yes to your DVM question. Find a +12v that's only on when the vehicle backlights are on, off the rest of the time.
