Is this type of MOT failure typical? was created by HappyMug
Hi, I am looking at an add for a low mileage 2005 Jiminy. When I check the MOT history, I see it failed an MOT in August 2020 before passing a couple of weeks later. The failed MOT included the following.....Repair immediately (major defects):
  • Nearside Inner Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced sill (7.1.1 (a) (i))
  • Offside Inner Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced sill (7.1.1 (a) (i))
  • Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded over the axle (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Front Coil spring fractured or broken (5.3.1 (b) (i))
  • Offside Rear Coil spring fractured or broken (5.3.1 (b) (i))
  • Offside Front Wheel bearing rough when rotated (5.1.3 (b) (i))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
  • Offside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
I am assuming all the failure points have been repaired / replaced as it subsequently passed, but is this typical for a Jimney of this age? The bit that is concerning me most is the "Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced sill" - presumably this is due to corrosion so is it likely to be a good long term fix or just patched up and likely to be the beginning of more serious / continuous problems? MOT history backs up the low mileage is genuine. 2019 MOT advisories also mention corrosion (headlight/front panel heavily corroded in places, but not within 30cm of a structural point, underside of both chassis and body showing corrosion or heavily undersealed in most places, underbonnet inner wings showing signs of corrosion"

Trying to work out if this low mileage Jimny is going to trouble and is this just what you have to expect with a 15 year old vehicle? Any thoughts appreciated.

Rust is the  only thing to worry about really, the rest are consumable parts and no concern.....

My 05' VVT looked very tidy but was quite badly corroded, be sure to look under the front arch liners at the back of the front body mount....

The first jimny I bought was pretty well rust free, so I was unaware of how bad they can be. Bought one from someone I knew who was in the motor trade, for my daughter to learn to drive in. She didn't get on with it so put it on eBay.
Winning bidder sent a guy to collect it in a covered car transporter, he had rear carpet up, went all round with a torch, pointed out all the corrosion. In fairness to him, we renegotiated the winning bid and peered happy, but he showed me that you could see MOT's on line!
Looking at past MOT, about a month old, it looked similar to yours, except the pass was on the same day! Spoke to guy I bought it from and he pleaded ignorance, claimed he paid for it all to be sorted, they had repaired back of rear wheel arches. Guy I bought it from does bike MOT's so double worrying.
I reported it all to VOSA, but you don't hear the verdict. Couldn't believe they were stupid enough to retest the same day when there was obviously more work than could be done in a day, some of the faults mentioned hadn't been touched.

In most instances mot weld repairs at a garage are not to anything like a restoration standard and I would steer well clear. There are many Jimny to choose from, take the time to find the cleanest you can.

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.
Bellerophon (2024 grello van daily
ADOS Attention Deficit Ooooh Shiny!

For the last 7 years i take my cars to an (we only mot)
I have found you get a fair MOT because not affiliated with any garage
Like take it next door they'll fix it
Also another problem is you can buy MOT's around £100+ and they don't even see your car

There's no shortage of Jimnys for sale, l would be tempted to look for a better one.

lf you do decide to buy that one, at least get the repair work inspected before you buy it, to make sure it's been done properly, and not just been patched up to last another year.
