Ieven though it's 15 years old 'm used to getting 70 out of my Jimmy on the motorway, but recently, when i get up to that speed the motor started spluttering and all the engine warning lights seemed to come on. Pulling on to the hard shoulder and turning the engine off for a few seconds cured the problem. However, last week on the motorway I had the same problem at 65 mph. Has anyone got any idea what's going wrong. Could it be the timing. If so should I look at getting a new belt/chain (which is it likely to be on a Y reg?).

How can I check if that's the fault and what do you do about it? Is it a simple DIY job or a second mortgage solution?

If yours is the twincam engine, the sensor is behind the alternator. When it starts stuttering, pull over and squirt some water on from a drinks bottle. If the problem goes away straight away the sensor is you problem.
The new part is £30-40, available on ebay and 20 minutes to fit. Slacken off the alternator adjuster bolt, lick the alternator belt aside and pivot the alternator over out of the way for easier access but if you have nimble hands you can do it without.
