M13A vvt - 'stumbles' when warm... Sorted!!!!!!! was created by freeduc
Hello! I have had a w-e-i-r-d problem with my 2006 Jimmy (m13a vvt engine). After 10-15min of driving, just as it get normally warm, it stumbles/cuts out momentarily. Full throttle sorts it out and then the car continues as if absolutely nothing has happened. This can occur at idle speed or on highway, not related to rpm at all, it just happens when the engine is warm and then disappears. I have cleaned the EGR (not really that bad), changed the crank sensor (actually made the car much more alert when driving and some minor hesitations disappeared, made the car behave 'newer'
) but the problem is still there. I ordered a cam sensor and thought it would be a breeze to fit. Too late I realised I have the vvt engine and that the cam sensor is not at the from of the engine. Some posts say it is in the back, but I can not find anything that resembles a cam sensor there. Can someone pls give me a pointer in the right direction? I have one sensor there, but it looks more like a water temp sensor.
____________
Update: Ok, so now I have a new cam sensor, crank sensor, cleaned the EGR and checked the EVAP so it's not clogged: I have cleaned the MAP and even drilled the fuel filler cap so I am sure there is no vacuum in the tank. The car STILL stumbles as if running out of fuel just when it gets warm and then no more problems. No 'check engine' light comes on as it does this and it goes away after 2-4 seconds. What can cause a temporary fuel starvation like this and then letting the car continue as if nothing has happened??? It starts every time, unless I turn it off at the 'right' (wrong) time when warm, then it behaves as if it is out of fuel the first few cranks and then it starts and run fine. Any ideas???
____________
So, about six months or so after the last update of this topic, the car became almost undrivable at times. I measured the fuel pressure in case the fuel pump would be the culprit but that seemed perfectly fine. I gave up and contacted a car electronics specialist who went through everything and admitted themselves that this was a hard one. After a day they give me a ring back and asked to change one of the ignition coils that gave semi-weird values. After that, the 'stumbling' when warm disappeared - YAY!!! - but I know had a smaller but similar stumble when cold. The specialist cost ... a lot ... so I thought I would change the other coil myself. I just did that and now the car runs like a dream again! This was by far the most difficult error I have ever run into, especially as the odbII values looked fine all the time. Super happy and I hope someone else gets an easier trip than I have had with this.

Yes, I found it! Daylight helps a lot! It is next to the EGR and the cable risks being burned by the EGR pipe. Thanks for helping!
However, even if the car is much nicer to drive now with two new sensors, the strange behaviour remains - just when the car gets hot, there is a hickup/stumble and then everything continues as if nothing has happened. The feeling is as if I would run out of gas for 2seconds - previously it was worse, now it has become better. Any ideas on what more to check?

I am bothering with this strange problem too, but I have problems only on idle when car is warmed up and stationary.

Resistance increases with temp, it may take something to get warm to show up a fault... Cam- crank sensor or say cables to a sensor etc breaking down.

I had a similar problem with a Peugeot and the culprit was the O2 sensor in the exhaust. The sympton was caused by the ECU switching fuel maps as the engine warms up and the sensor not giving the reading the ECU expects. It would always cut out on me once in a journey, usually when pulling out at the same busy roundabout!
