Can the dohc engine from a 2001 be used as a direct replacement for the earlier g13bb single ohc engine? Any modifications required at all?

No. They use different gearboxes, different ECUs and a different wiring loom. It's a big job to swap

J18a is only DOHC which is bolt on g chassis jimny m13a is not bolt on but it not very complicated swap
