Hi folks,

Every time I start my car I keep hearing the sound of a rush of water through pipes for the first few seconds. As I don't have a flushing toilet onboard, I'm guessing this is some moisture built up in the aircon system, or possibly air in the radiator, although I doubt that it the case. Does anyone know the best way of checking and servicing this system? Do you need to buy expensive gauges and vacuum pumps or would it be worth just paying someone at a garage to fix it?

Thanks,

Mike

Does it do it with the aircon OFF? If it does, then it may be air in the heater pipes, or elsewhere in the cooling system.

If it only does it with the aircon ON then possibly it is low on gas, and needs topping up: £35 at Kwickfit or ATS, money back if it doesn't get colder than before they top up.

My RAV4 makes a sort of whooshing sound from behind the dash when the engine is cold, never found it, and you can't hear it outside the cabin.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Yes, it does it with the aircon on or off. To be honest, I don't think the air con has worked since I bought the jimny. I've never heard it operating when the AC button is illuminated.

That's exactly what it sounds like, a whooshing sound behind the dash. I might just have to take it to a garage. Provided the pump and switch are working, it probably needs to be vacuum pumped, re-oiled and recharged.

Hi, mine makes the same noises and the aircon works perfectly, and i have noticed this on a few vehicles so if your aircon os working ok i wouldn't worry about it

As it does it with the air-con off, it isn't the air-con.

As I said, my RAV4 makes a whooshing noise (it doesn't have air-con) I'm guessing it is something to do with the way the water flows until the thermostat opens. It used to bother me, now I don't notice.

Air lock in the heater matrix or a partially blocked heater matrix?

I had a similar noise - running water - in an old FIAT (no it wasn't rain coming through the rust holes!) it was water circulating in the matrix on start up and air trapped in the matrix. The matrix was in a similar position as the Jimnys so the coolant was circulating into the cab hence the noise.
