Can you remove the engine and leave the gearbox behind or do you have to remove the gearbox first

Yes, you will want to support the gearbox at the front on a jack or a stand.

Mating them back together is the fun part as you need to align them straight and if you change the clutch while you have easy access, you'll need to make sure you get it aligned properly or you'll never get the box and engine back together.

I have recently removed both the engine and gearbox on mine. I did them separately, stripping as much off the engine as I could to make it easier and also to be able to get at all the disconnect points. I have an engine hoist so lifting it was not a problem. I also used the hoist to then lift the box out. Both units have lifting points so slinging them is no problem. If you have them both out and are going to inspect/change the clutch then it is easier to centralise using the gearbox or you can make up an alignment tool or buy a kit. Either way it is essential that the first shaft slides in easily or re-mating the two becomes a nightmare. I stripped the engine as I was doing a major clean up due old off roading muck coupled with a long term oil leak. Have since found that there was no sump gasket fitted. Just a load of red silicon gasket gunge!
