Hmmm, a bit odd.
Hot rad at top and cool at bottom might point to blockage or waterpump fail, but odd that no sign of overheating if you've no water in rad!
I guess reservoir I would call expansion tank. It takes up the expansion of the coolant over a certain pressure which is regulated by the sprung rad cap, then as the engine cools, sucks it back in.
My prob was the expansion tank over filling and spewing water out onto the road- head gasket fail, the pot was pushing pressure into the coolant, causing constant loss of water.
Dunno if any of this helps, but just take gallons of water with you, keep a close eye on temp, and if it goes too high, STOP, allow to cool and top up. Take care taking off rad cap (use a rag) in case you get scalded.
Do you have any white smoke from exhaust on startup? That would be water getting into a pot.
Best wishes, I've had my share of interesting probs like this! :side:

If you have the time, take the rad out, flush it both ways. If there is crud coming out, that's prop your problem.

I ran mine for weeks with my problem, it will keep going if you feed it loads of water if it needs it!

Now you mention it it has had a little whitish smoke but only for first few minutes of driving. Yer my mate just said take loads of bottles of water Incase u need to stop and put some in and it should be fine. If water hasn't dropped after half of my big journey then I will try not to worry too much.
If not it's into garage next week. I'm thinking it had an air lock in radiator and once that blockage treatment had flushed through that's why it sucked extra water from reservoir?

Every car will blow a bit on startup from cold. If you had water in pot it would be a big cloud of white steam.
Hope it's just an airlock then, just keep an eye on it and take a load of water in case you need it.
Cheers, Gary
