In all honesty has anybody ever confirmed the engine number to the log book when buying one by actually seeing the number? I have just had to take the exhaust manifold off and then the muck off where the number was etched to just be able to read the one on my soft top. All I could see with everything in place turned out to be the casting number of the size of the block using a torch and a mirror. It did not make sense till I removed the manifold and then realised that the number was running vertically upwards and so read 1298cm3! The actual number was below that covered in muck and lightly etched on the block, again running vertically up. This put it right behind the bowl part of the exhaust manifold down section and hence made it impossible to view from underneath with the car on ramps and the bonnet open for light. So come on then own up.
