Bottom Crank Pulley? was created by Casey
Hi

Hoping someone can give me a steer on this.

On the way home yesterday a nasty rattling noise started coming from the front of the car. When I lifted the bonnet, I could tell it was coming from somewhere around the belt.

Took it in to the local garage today and he reckons the bottom crank pulley is what's causing the noise and advised not to drive it. Gave me some spiel about there could be 2 pulleys that are causing the problem, but will replace this one first to check.

Anyway, bottom line is he wants £260 plus VAT. This seems steep if he's only changing one pulley. Wouldn't it be best to be changing the lot and the belt at the same time? Just looking for some idea of what I should be paying as I haven't a clue.

By the way it's a 2005 1.3 JLX DOHC.

I changed the bottom pulley on mine last year , also a 2005. The pulley itself was around £160, common to go as the rubber damper in the middle breaks. If you took the belts off normally the outside of the pulley just falls off. The fun part comes trying to get the middle off the end of the crank.
The rattle you can hear is where the pulley is moving backwards and tapping on the engine.

Thanks for your responses. I guess if the pulley costs £160 the overall price isn't all that bad.

Cheers.

If he thinks it could be 1 of 2 pulleys, just make sure he does the crank pulley first! I'm not sure which other pulley he thinks it could be though.
