Anyone Know About BOC Welders From 1980? was created by JerseyJimny
I rescued this arc welder out of a skip at college (with permission of course) and I want to get it hooked up and working...

But I want to check the oil level on it first as it's been thrown into the skip pretty much up side down and not too sure if it's even got any oil left in it haha

I can't find how to actually check the oil though... I have tried taking the top plate off but I can't seam to get it off

I can't see any other way of checking it...

Anyone have any ideas?

I've never taken one apart but I presume all the heavy transformer bits (and they are bloody heavy!) are suspended from the lid, so maybe you just need to try lifting a bit harder!
It looks quite clean- Is there any sign of the oil escaping? I imagine it would be fairly well sealed.

Good find anyway. Arc welding might be a bit old-fashioned now but those old oil-cooled welders are nice machines to weld with, much smoother than the cheap air-cooled ones.

I learnt to arc weld with one of them good welders don't let any one tell you arc welding's isn't any good you get good strong welds with a arc and in my opinion easier to use than a mig

Oh god damn it's heavy...

I learned to weld on a Oxford version of this which was bigger.. I found the AC arc much more stable which Is why I snapped this up in a heart beat...

I was swinging the bloody thing by is handles haha still didn't come OFF!

I have cleaned it up in that picture but it was just surface grime no clear sign of oil leakage...

I love arc welding... its the cheapest way and most effective once you have the hang on it.. just completing my overhead module at college then onto codings and I am sure this welder has another 30 years service in it... If not more!
