started wiring up my tow-bar socket today but got stuck and downed tools until I can get good advice as I don't know what I'm doing

got the first bit OK
function socketCar harness
Left indicatoryellowGreen/Red stripe
Right indicatorgreenGreen/Yellow stripe
Brake lightsredGreen / White stripe + dots

but here's where I stumbled, the socket has seperate wires brown (right light) and black (left light) and I'm guessing that both these socket wires connect to the single car harness wire as below:

Side lights
function socketCar harness
Right LightbrownRed / Yellow stripe
Left LightblackRed / Yellow stripe

and I also assume the earth connects as below:
function socketCar harness
earthwhiteblack

if someone can double check and confirm the above is OK (or wrong) I'd be very grateful
thanks

Halford

if there is only one red/yellow wire feeding both rear lights then yes connect them together but if there are 2 find out which one goes where and connect them to the brown or black as appropriate.
The Earth is correct Black to white socket.
The idea of separate wires is you will still have one working tail light if one blows.

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

You don't have to use the car earth wire(black)
You can take the white wire from the socket and earth it anywhere on the car using an existing bolt or hole.
Just make sure you get a good earth and use a star washer to bite through the paint. :)
If you have reassembled it all and put the seats etc. back you could cheat and run a couple of wires from the rear light units and splice in to the tow bar wires at a suitable point?
I did something similar on my first Jimny.

When I wired mine up using the guide from this site, I found a couple of the wires were wrong/different. I didn't write down which though

Anyway, you may find you have to play around a bit to get the right ones.
