A week or two back my nephew got his Jimny smacked out of shape by someone who ran a stop sign, he has full comprehensive insurance and the company is suggesting the vehicle be written off due to the cost of the parts required, and as I understand it, they're going to cut him a check and leave the vehicle with him for him to dispose of, which I think is fairly unusual.
What parts on a gen 3 (around 2010), manual transmission be worth acquiring to be used as spares/upgrades for a gen 4? I've been browsing parts catalogs and things that I would have thought were interchangeable have different part numbers, which doesn't mean they don't interchange, but it moves the equation from will work to might work.
All of the running gear (wheels, brakes, axles, suspension) will bolt on to a gen4. Possibly the steering box too. Yes part numbers, spring rates, tyre size etc might be different, but the architecture is the same and the parts will fit.
The chassis is slightly different and obviously the body is the main difference. I can't think of any body/interior/electrical parts that could be swapped over, but I haven't spent enough time with a gen4 to look properly.
I'd like to think the axles are narrower - track on a gen 3 is 1355 front, 1365 rear, and on the gen 4, it's 1395 & 1405 - I could be wrong & the difference might be in the wheel offset - I'm still exploring.
The right front corner took the brunt of the impact, the leading arm is now banana shaped, I'm not certain what else in that corner is gone.
