I'm aquaphobic so intentionally try not to get my wheels wet so I can't really comment but I'd have thought there was some kind of breather for the box that could be extended unless it just uses the dipstick tube which wouldn't be as easy to seal or extend. I'm sure one of the water babies will have a better idea

There is a breather, which can be extended, but if you get in deep enough water can also enter via the dipstick/fill tube.

Would I be able to just seal the dipstick in as it will only be used for pay and plays once or twice a month and the site is less than 5 miles away so unlikely to do the millage for a box service

Also to mention I did drain the fluid soon as I got home did not seem to be any water or sludge in there

If the fluid was clean then I might suggest you got away with it and changing the box is overkill if it's still selecting the gears and not slipping when it shouldn't. If you have already got another box one it will show you where the breather is and two it's there as a spare for if and when it's needed.
