ARB Air locker vs Quaife LSD with Jimny TC

Thanks Busta for your reply. If i'm understanding things correctly. Your set up improves traction in 2WD due to the ATB on the rear. You have your diff locked (welded) on activation of the 4WD so in 4WD you have a ATB rear and locked front but no way to drive 4WD without front Diff being locked. My knowledge isn't sufficient to know how much of a compromise this is. My guess is long faster drives on sand would need to be in 2WD as doing this with the front locked due to welding would cause issues. This correct ? . I am liking the idea of ATB rear and ARB air locker in front. Added benefit of this being if the air line fails (lamberts concerns) you still have the ATB. Extra level of cover in my circumstances as both are not reliant on the air. Thanks again...
Your understanding is correct. The main issue with my setup is the extra stress it puts on the drivetrain when you need to use 4wd on surfaces with relatively high levels of grip- those times where you need a bit more traction than 2wd but not so much that all 4 tyres can slip. It hasn't caused me any mechanical issues in the 4 years since I welded it, but you can definitely feel the extra stresses through the steering wheel. That may apply to high speed driving on sand, not my area of expertise, although generally in a Jimny if you can do more than 30mph you don't need to be in 4wd anyway and, of course, you have the ability to shift on the fly.
A selectable front locker would undoubtedly be a much better option, but I didn't want to spend the money.

Welded front diff is an extreme solution.

Get a front LSD.

Just to throw another option in the mix: E-Lockers.

I have not had experience with E-Lockers but that's what I'm leaning towards.

I like the idea of the convenience of an air locker without the extra hassle of an air compressor.

My brothers land cruiser has knock-off air lockers. He purchased the vehicle with the system not operating due to the poor little single cylinder air compressor that they supplied being burnt up, probably from previous owner using it to inflate the 35" tyres on it. Ended up fitting a much bigger 24V compressor in the bed with built in tanks and regulator.

anyone using E-Lockers with great success?

Hi Filipao

Thanks for your replies. Its very much appreciated. Im leaning towards Quaife ATB LSD rear (UK availability and reputation) and ARB air locker front (performance and tried and tested). This combination looks to give me broad options along with the BLSD TC. Id like to understand why you think ATB LSD front and rear would be preferable. Always learning and so I would like to understand why to expand my understanding. Thankyou.

If you're considering a front air locker, I'd suggest you do both ends, two reasons, the first being with one air locker installed you've already expended more than half the cost.

The second reason is this, any option that uses the BLSD TC is going to be "reactionary", there has to be a loss of traction and wheel spin for the system to activate, a spinning wheel abruptly halted, either by the application of the brake or sudden contact with the ground stresses the drive line. A driver selectable locker allows for more controlled progress.

Robert Pepper has Jimny specific YouTube videos where he demonstrates this using a twin air locked Jimny.
