Two widely differing trains of thought here, so let me ask this question outright.

Is an easily defeated theft deterrent system of any value at all?

Yes, I understand the desire to do something simple, especially for the "non-technical" amongst us, but if its easily defeated, will it serve it's intended purpose?

How about a steering wheel lock, one of the clearly visible ones, which might actually be more of a deterrent, because they can see it before they break into the car.

Dunno how the insurance work for you guys but if my car is vandalized like broken into but not stolen and gone, there is a different case and the car gets repaired, sometimes not optimal and fixed in a way that is cheapest for the insurance. And you would have to spend time to deal with it yourself.

The best thing would be that the thief is deterred like Fordem says, and either leaves the car there not broken, (wich is why I leave my SJ with open doors), or gets to take it away so it is never found so you get a full pay-out.

Here it is like if your car catches fire from the car next to you and if it is put out before any major damage is done it might appear a good thing at first but then you are left with a complicated insurance case to deal with and the rest-value is subtracted. Much better if it is totally damaged and you get paid in full.
