In order to protect the rear plastic panels I covered them in in adhesive foam. I have now removed that successfully using the steam cleaner. The panels are very clean.  But in places where for instance the adhesive didn't take too well or where the abuse got through the foam there are areas that have noticeable scuffing some of which has discoloured, these marks are not deep but noticeable. I had half hoped that the steam might just be hot enough to relax the plastic enough to mitigate the worst of them but alas not. I don't really want to use a wax to hide it I'd prefer something more permanent?  What might my options be?

I'm not really sure there is a product out there that can really get rid of scratches on plastic. I've tried numerous scratch remover products on boats & cars but when it comes to plastics once its scratched I think thats pretty much it. I've scratched the rear plastic on the door on my lcv so I ordered a new plastic panel although haven't fitted it yet as I would probably damage the new one with the frequent use. When I got a pro detailer to do my SJ and I asked if he could remove some of scratches on the plastic dials on the dash he couldn't really do it as trying to remove them will only cause more damage. I've had similar stuff on boats where the more you try to fix the problem you can actually make it worse so be careful with what you do.

What you are saying there is as long as it is clean then the marks are character, that speaks to in not being a new car? Either that or I have to accept it is always going to be a 10 foot car and don't put it in the show 'n' shine without spending a ton of money on new parts.

Did the back panels in a Gen 3 change much over the years or are they same? If so I would probably try to find a jimny being broken that has a nice interior and use the panels from that. I like things new on my stuff but there's just some things you can't get. My SJ is a good example of this. It still has some flaws which I would love to get fixed but the parts no longer exist so I would have to go down the custom route but that would change its originality which I don't want.

I tried a light wet and dry, polish and some bumper ‘back to black’ stuff on the rear panel on my Gen 3, it didn’t get rid of the scratches but toned them down a lot.

According to the internet you can use a heat gun to reflow the surface, but I wouldn’t have the skill/confidence to do it, well not if I didn’t have a good practice on a scrap panel first.

As it goes I do have a spare rear sill cover this by far the worst panel so I will have a practice with that before the sides
