Weird vibration at 2000'ish rpm - does yours do it? was created by 300bhpton
4th Gen Jimny.
So I've always noticed a bit of a harshness/vibration at around 2000rpm, as you accelerate through 1600-2500rpm. Usually in a taller gears, 3rd, 4th or 5th. So 30mph on the level in 4th (manual car). Or by labouring on a hill in 4th or 5th.
Its enough that it causes a small rattle from the dash, the dealer has had a look at the dash and slightly improved the rattle, but not solved it.
So, last Sunday I fitted the Bravo Snorkel, all seemed good initially. However, having driven the car more I notice it has made this vibration much worse. You can feel it through the entire car and makes the throttle pedal feel like its vibrating. I'm not sure if it is just some sort of harmonic imbalance or something more sinister. It is definitely throttle induced, you need to be at 75-100% throttle at this rpm. Below this rpm is smooth and fine, as is 3000-6000rpm. If you lift off when the vibration occurs it will essentially stop the noise and feel of the vibration.
If you catch it right, it now feels and sounds a lot like a buzzer going off. I'm going to try detaching the snorkel intake pipe from the filter box and add the original ducting back in, just to check if it is the snorkel amplifying this problem rather than it just being coincidence.
However, I'd love to know if other owners can induce the vibration at 1600-2500rpm in 3rd, 4th or 5th at 75-100% throttle?
Please post up if you do. As it would be good to know if it is a design issue or a specific issue with my vehicle.
I can also feel the vibration through the brake pedal when engine braking through this range, if I dip the clutch the vibration through the pedal vanishes. So I'm not 100% convinced it is induction related. I've only noticed it under engine braking since the weekend (i.e. since installing the snorkel). I did give the Jimny a bit of a pasting in the snow and off road on Monday. I don't think this would be the cause of the increase in the vibration. But I'd like to rule out what I can and work through the issue a bit before involving the dealer.

Sounds similar to the transmission vibrations that can be common in a gen3 around similar revs. I'd always associated them with cumulative driveline wear and learnt to drive around them.

for 30mph driving I find the gearing a bit awkward in my SZ5. 3rd gear feels too noisy but put it in 4th and it feels laboured and buzzes the car which can be worse during the cold. I also found the sensor cover that sits at the top of the windscreen to have an annoying rattle/buzzing sound which sounds like its right in front of you but this doesn't happen all the time and I think the weather can also make it worse. I also questioned my snorkel but found it to be that sensor cover.

If it wasn't so new you would think it's was engine or gearbox mounts.
That said it could be the cold temperature changing their characteristics and increasing resonance you feel. Maybe try again at the weekend, 10deg by Sunday should warm things up a bit.
Did the snorkel fit remove any factory resonance chambers from the intake? They aren't just sound baffles as many believe, they also improve the airflow into the engine which can impact the way it performs. Your plan to refit and test should eliminate this. Good luck.
