How delicate and or easy to remove are the casing on the mirrors. I am thinking of colouring a pair and replacing the existing ones but before I charge in with the plastic pry tools I wanted some advice to avoid unnecessary damage?

It's easy enough if you find the locations of the "spring clips" that hold the cover on. I used a thin cable tie pushed into each clip to hold it open, then the cover removes easily with no damage.
You do need to force the mirror about, feels wrong, but so far they have been fine with the abuse. One of the clips is behind the mirror.
If you don't get a better answer I can take some photos tonight of the target locations, I have a spare mirror I practiced on before I removed mine.

Mike has it spot on, my only advice, remove the mirror first, it’s held on with 3 nuts on the inside and much easier to do inside rather than on the car.
Pictures attached of the cover and base plate.
