I have ODB reader and recovery membership card, plus my phone. That's all folks.
Breakdowns in the past (other vehicles I have owned) have all been beyond a roadside repair, so I now try to roll into a pub and phone a very nice man, they can have a go at fixing while I have a coffee / beer depending upon severity of fault.
Works for me.

I carry lots of tools as the RAC/AA etc won't recover you from a green lane and I've been out to get friends cars going again or to drag them home.

That's different, if someone gets into difficulty and rings up for my help then I can bring all sorts. Alternatively if I know I am going remote for the day again I will have all sorts with me but under normal circumstances less is definitely more.

My mate had the same problem, he broke down whilst off roading at Cown quarry. His mate dragged him to the main road and then they called out the recovery service. When they turned up and saw the car covered in mud he refused to help him as he said he had been off roading which invalidated his breakdown cover.
